Emerging Fringe 2022
Emerging Fringe, a program of The San Diego International Fringe Festival, is designed to encourage students — Grades 9 - 12 — to produce their own original works and experience the world of Fringe Festivals.
Our 8rd annual competition accepts any performance genre… anything that can be performed on stage.

Faculty from public and private schools in San Diego County are invited to choose entrants for competition.
- Applications open soon.
- All pieces must be original works created by the student(s)
- Student(s) or group must in or entering in Grades 9-12 in 2022
- A group consists of 10 or fewer performers on stage
- Entry fee: $40*
- Applications close May 15th, 2022
Competition Dates
- Semifinals: tbd
- Finals: Saturday, June 4th - time tbd
Finals will be held downtown at one of the Fringe-managed venues. Previous competitions have been at the Spreckels and Lyceum theatres.
Tickets to the Finals will be available online for $5.
Prizes
The 1st Place Winner will receive a waiver of production fees for FIVE performance slots in the San Diego International Fringe Festival for 2023.
Additional prizes include:
- 1st Place: $500 & School Trophy
- 2nd Place: $300 & School Trophy
- 3rd Place: $200 & School Trophy
- All performing artists, including student writer, choreographer, composer, director, participating in the emerging Fringe competition will each receive a 3-show complimentary pass to the 2022 San Diego International Fringe Festival.
The Competition Processr
- All pieces must be original works created by the student performer(s).
- Maximum TIME LIMIT for each piece is 5 minutes.
- All accepted applicants will perform in the Semifinals.**
- The top 10 winners of the Semifinals advance to the Finals.
- All semifinalists perform their same 5 minute piece in the Finals.
- Professional Judges and audience members will vote on their choice of winners.
